The ‘PostOffice‘ in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England is the venue for weekly, after work events for developers, creatives and tech start-up founders.
Since June 2011, the aim has been to provide the local grass roots tech/digital scene, with a space in which informal networking, presentations and collaborative thinking can occur.
User groups who currently run free, monthly events at PostOffice (usually on a Tuesday evening) are:
- @DesignInterest – ‘Aiming to build a friendly, supportive community for designers, open up design process and have some fun along the way!’ (Usually on the 1st Tuesday of the Month).
- @jsnortheast – ‘A JS user group for the North East of England.’ (Usually on the 2nd Tuesday of the Month).
- @PHPNE – ‘The PHP user group for the North East of England, UK.’ (Usually on the 3rd Tuesday of the Month).
- @RubyNorthEast – ‘The voice of Ruby (and Rails) in the North East of England.’ (Usually on the 4th Tuesday of the Month).
PostOffice has also hosted one-off events by the @UXNorthEast and ’Final Cut Pro North East’ user groups, a free workshop on ‘Sage One Accounts‘ delivered by then Sage Online Marketing Manager, Michael Barber and the very first public presentations by the @ignite100 tech accelerator cohort of 2011/2012. Occasional daytime events and workshops also occur from time to time, and there are plans to introduce regular co-working days in the very near future.

Google Map of UK North East Tech Scene
The North East of England, is really buzzing right now with a thriving, grass-roots community of tech start-up founders, developers and investors all working together to support each other and build great things in the region. There are tonnes of exciting and world-class businesses in the area and as such, we thought it would be handy to start a crowdsourced ‘Google Map of the UK North East Tech Scene’ (below) which you are very welcome to add yourself to, or email us at plandigital@live.co.uk with suggestions for who else to include.
